Deckside Thoughts

Cheryl, from Deckside Thoughts, has been gracious enough to provide a guest post here about a subject that we began discussing a few weeks ago. I can't recall how the topic came up, but I trust her opinion, she is a very honest, yet tactful person. I had asked her to take a look at my blog, and suggest any changes. She did, I cleaned it up, and it feels more like me now.

I then asked her what she looks for when she first visits a blog. The following post is very interesting reading, and spurs you to ask yourself, "what first impression does my blog give?"  I know you'll find this guest post motivating to make some changes that you've been itching to do anyway.  Thank you, Cheryl.
----------------------------

Alexandra asked me if I'd write about what one's blog looks like to others. I'm visually oriented so the question I ask myself is simple. What am I trying to tell you about my blog with the look of my header and my widgets? What's my focus?

I'll give you the bottom line first. If I'm assaulted by my surroundings before I even get to your post, I'll be less likely to stick with you very long. Anything that makes it harder for me to find your post or distracts me while I'm reading will cause me to stop and ask myself if I want to hang around. If your content is engaging, you know how to use grammar, and you're honest, I'll read around the distractions. Guess what? The more I like what you've written, the more likely I am to check out my surroundings, too.

A simple header is most pleasing to my eye. If a blog's header is a busy picture covered by a detailed explanation of what the blog's all about, I skip over it. I can't read the words because of all the busy-ness behind them. I've tried and failed so often, it's simply not worth the effort.

American eyes tend to look at the upper left-hand corner of a page first. Bloggers whose layouts have their actual posts on the left and all sidebars on the right are easy on my eyes. I went there to read the post and it's the first thing I see. Folks who make their living from advertising or promoting products often have a left-hand sidebar with ads to catch the eye. I usually skip over those simply because I'm not a shopper. Other folks use that left sidebar for a variety of reasons. Some attract me. Some don't.

Some folks put their followers widget right below their header. It's a very nice gesture. Other folks put advertising right under their header. I understand the reasoning for this too. For me, both are just more stuff I have to scroll through to find the post. The more work I have to do to get to the post, the more frustrating it is for me to visit a blog.

As far as widgets go, keeping it simple never fails. The more there are, the less likely I am to look at any of them. The bigger they are, the more taken aback I am. Big ones seem to be screaming at me for my attention. Sometimes, I just want to run away from the blog.

I'm not a faddist. Most of the current blog fads confuse me. I don't quite understand the whole button craze. I'll gladly add links to blogs I adore or simply like to my blogroll, but why would I want to clutter up my blog with a bunch of buttons? And those reels that spin them all like a never-ending slot machine or a very fast slide show? I get nauseous if I don't cover them with one of my hands. Honest. I have severe motion sickness.

I used to display the buttons of the communities I'd joined. When I realized I wasn't even participating in them much any more, I took the buttons down. Keeping it simple, and in this case, honest. How could I promote those communities when I didn't even know what was going on over there any more? I couldn't.

Backgrounds, not outline templates, have become a new issue for me. More bloggers are switching to pictures for their backgrounds. I don't know about you, but I can barely read the words through the trees, clouds, photo montages, pebbles, and raindrops. Same goes for black backgrounds with white writing. Tough on the eyes. Interestingly enough, pale colors on black work really well and look really sleek.

If you visit my blog in July, you'll know a ton about me without ever reading one of my posts. You won't know anything intimate about me. If I've done my job with my blog layout, you'll know enough to decide if my posts are worth a read.

Peace.

48 notes to the Empress:

  1. Fantastic post. All good things to keep in mind. I like a clean blog and mine is more cluttered than I wanted it to be. Thinking about switching themes.

  2. brilliant stuff. there's no such thing as elegance without simplicity. some people can design using lots of energy and lines and it looks good, but less people than are attempting. human beings are all visual creatures. there is so much visual noise. you are right on. give me something easy on the eyes.

  3. Thank you, Cheryl, for your guest post here, and your guidance for me. I love the way my nw space looks!

Thanks for the awesome post, it is a great read.

  5. Maybe someday I'll be smart enough to figure out how to MAKE some changes.

  6. Cheryl, I totally agree about 'clutter'. If I don' feel as though I can sit down and put my feet up when I'm at someone's "place", I won't take the time to read....unless I'm already a fan of what they have to say.

  7. Thanks for inviting me aboard. All my friends are all "OH. MY. GOD! Cheryl's finally been invited to the KINGDOM! She's almost as cool as dooce!" My boss is giving me another raise, my mom finally likes me best, and Pioneer Woman wants me to judge one of her photography contests. My head is just spinning with the offers pouring in to be 6 places at once. I may need to hire an assistant to manage my life.

  8. Well I am a big fan of Cheryl and she offers the very best pearls of wisdom. I think you should get her back here for another post on great blogging etiquette too as she is a role model to us all.

  9. Good sound advice from a guest post befitting an Empress' website.

  10. Great advice Cheryl!

Then you have to be somewhat tech-advanced to get the effect you want. I'm trying to look at mine for any glaring errors.

  11. Okay, Empress! I just voted! :) :) I know you like me now! ;)

    Cheryl, LOVED your thoughts!

  12. cheryl is one of my daily stops...i agree whole heartedly with her on the simplicity of a blog...your layout will tell me what you are here for...great post. off to vote!

  13. How funny! One of the reasons I just changed my format is I felt the same way whenever I looked at my own blog.

  14. Cheryl, this was wonderful input. I reconstructed my blog recently and cut back on clutter, turned off the music, etc. It's fun to 'try' new things for a while, but after that it had to go. I do have a background on my blog that's a little wild, but then I try to appeal to both teens and adults with my writing so I've been keeping that around.

Appreciate the thought here. Glad The Empress had you on.

Alexandra, it was great to read this guest blog. And also, I went and voted today. I'll try to vote all week for ya.

    All the best,
    R.M.Gilbert

  15. Yup. I agree with most of the bloggy advice.

Can't stand too busy blogs. Really can't stand music that automatically plays; I don't give them 3 seconds of my time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Really, really, good advice! I can't stand super-busy blogs, or ones with too many ads/buttons, or, God forbid, one with pop-ups. Helpful advice to anyone starting out in this blog world.

  17. I love this woman's advice!!!

    I voted for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thoughtful, well written and helpful post. Thank you.

  19. Excellent points, all of them. I think we, as bloggers, sometimes forget that we have to design our blogs more for the readers (user experience, in tech talk) than ourselves. There's a balance to be achieved.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It was funny. When I saw "Deckside Thoughts" as a topic on "Good Day, Regular People" I thought, wait a minute. She can't use that! It's the name of someone else's blog! And lo and behold, there you are. Just defending you I guess ;-) Anyway, you make some excellent points in this post. I agree with just about everything you said. I often wonder if I'm making the impression I want.

  22. Great tips. And I tend to like things more simple too. I actually have a button and recently started a button page so as to not clutter my blog, but for the life of me I can't make them line up right. It's annoying, but at least it's tucked away.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Great tips. I overhauled my blog in January and just wanted it to look "cleaner." A lot of your tips led me to make some cuts that (I hope) make the thing more readable.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I voted, for you in case you were wondering. AND I really enjoyed the guest post. I am a big fan of clean blogs as well. I have some buttons about blogher and communities I am active in but am trying to come up with a way to take them off the main page-I'm open to suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I completely agree with everything she said. In fact, I think everything that she doesn't like, I do! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  26. Love these tips! It took me forever to find a style I like but really it is most important that the reader finds it easy to read and navigate. Off to do a little playing with formatting (and to vote for The Empress of course!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Exactly!! Everyone is entitled to their own blog design. But if you really want readers to stay with you, your design needs to be user friendly.
Love your new look. The background is lovely, very uplifting.

  28. Thanks for this great and timely guest post. As a new subject in the kingdom of the Empress, I can use all the help I can get so as not to bring shame to the kingdom through bloggal (not a word?) ugliness. Oh; voted for you, Empress. Not that I'm trying to curry favor or anything. (Mmmm... curry.)

  29. Ohhh interesting stuff!! I'm guilty of the followers under my header, and I have a couple of scrolls, but I did those to condense things because I have A LOT of loves. I don't expect people to actually LOOK at them though. They are really more for my personal use (easy blog hopping for example) then anything else.

I have to totally agree about the white text on a black background, or brown background, or any dark background, really. If I have to struggle to read it, it's not going to matter how good the content is.

Excellent!! I'm heading over to become a fan now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That was really interesting to get her perspective and I can't argue with any of that logic.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with her. But my big turnoffs for blogs are music and load-time. All those gadgets can be annoying, but it's even worse when the damned page won't load! And I literally can't read the ones on black backgrounds. My eyes won't see them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Well hopefully you had a good visit, as I see you are following me now yayayayyy I am finally venturing into blog popularity yayayyay will be venturing around yours for a while, please do not feel violated!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well said, Cheryl. I agree with you on all counts. Clean, simple, honest - RIGHT ON!

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is a great list, Cheryl, and I totally agree!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congratulations on your nomination! Of course I voted for you...look at all I've missed! I love the way your blog looks, or is it just that "absence makes the heart grow fonder"? I've missed you, too...alot...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree as well. There are definite design turn-offs. One of my pet peeves is not being able to find the comment form. Are you hiding it because you don't want me to leave a comment?

    ReplyDelete
  37. The thing is - great tips - AND, said so nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is really helpful. Thanks, Cheryl, for this information! And thank you, dear Empress for visiting by blogoir on my SITS day last week. :-)

  39. Thank you all for welcoming Cheryl here. She did give us something to think about.

Thank you so much, Cheryl. I enjoyed having you here.

  40. Love simple....kind of along the lines of K.I.S.S!! Keep it simple stupid! ha ha

    Great thoughts! I agree!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Simple is better for me, too. Too much movement definitely makes me want to click off of the page. I found you through Theta Mom Community, and I'm really enjoying your posts. I'm a new follower for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Less is best!

I love the new font on your blog empress. So much easier to read.

And don't get me started on music. Sheesh. I am listening to something always when I'm reading my blogs and someone else's music, while rockin' to them, is never what I want to listen to.

    And . . . I've been voting for you.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Great advice - thanks for having Cheryl over! I'm also a big fan of simplicity (if only I could keep my house as clean as my blog...). I like your new look, Alexandra! Love the blue and the air, which holds personal significance for me. Refreshing.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I definitely put a lot of these into practice when i had my designer do my blog. I also like a fairly clean layout.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, my blog may drive you crazy but I wish you would go there and tell me your honest opinion. Of course, I might not do what you say....ha.. but I might. You have such a creative eye (photography) and your blog is simple to read.
