Blogoversary Day 5: The Week's Going Too Fast!

Shake it--Shake it, it's Day 5 of the Blogoversary
Thank you, to all of you, for visiting yesterday at Kel's Place, MomGotBlog, as Kel helped me celebrate the blogoversary week, with my first interview. It was so fun to answer questions and to give my opinion like a woman to be dealt with. I was into that.

This blogoversary week is going so fast: we still have a new weekly feature to announce, and a giveaway!! BUT, for today, I want to spotlight my First Followers.

My First Followers: they made me jump out of my chair when I saw I had ONE follower. Then, when I had TWO. Oh, there are few things more exciting to a new blogger than getting her first followers.

This blog was born under a lucky sign, because these two women who were my first followers, didn't just click the follow button, and bye-bye. They were my only visitors for the whole month of March. If they missed any posts, they'd go back day by day, and leave me comments under every single post they had missed.

I remember waking up one snowy, Saturday morning, opening up the computer and seeing SEVEN comments awaiting me. My lovely first followers had left me comments for every single post they missed.

How did they know I needed that? How did they know that would keep me going? I know I've never been able to keep up on any new blogger's site like that. I'm sorry that I haven't, because the joy these two women brought me for the entire month of March...I just can't explain with words.

We all say we'd blog even if no one came to read. Yes, that may be true, but blogging is so much more fun, when you have someone who makes you feel as if your posts are not just going to the wind.

Here are the introductions, to my lovely first followers, who remain loyal to me to this day, and I to them:

My Very First Follower:  Shari, from Earth Mother Just Means I'm Dusty.

I discovered Shari 's blog  on  a morning in January, with a post she had up on being awakened by her pug's collar, that had become entangled in her glorious red hair during the night (don't ask), as he leapt out of her bed and tore down the hallway, her hair flying along with him. She lost half a head of hair that morning. I came back every day, and clearly, this was a woman who was not out to impress. She wrote of all her mothering faux pas, and of not being able to find a clean glass in her kitchen if her mother's life depended on it. She.Was.Fabulous.

I shyly left her a comment--I think I asked her to marry me. She EMAILED me back, and told me she was packing her bags and could I be waiting at the airport with a Starbucks, please?

Then--bing--I had my first follower! Shari was following me. And she stayed faithful through the first lonely months of blogging.

This kind, kind woman...let me tell you, you can't imagine my surprise, when I came to see her name elsewhere. This woman, obviously, had other things to do. But she kept on visiting, and leaving me comments.

I found out, months later, that this kind stranger had read for the part that went to Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club. Yes. And I further found out that this woman is a comedic playwright, and a 2006 Telly award winner. The list of her accomplishments goes on. I knew none of this, and now that I do, I am humbled by her kindness toward me.

Her blog is one of humor, love for her children, husband, and pugs, and is dedicated to the Almost-Fabulous. Shari also writes for MommyPoppins, and MomInTheCity, among many others. Ah, Shari, the DustyEarthMother.

Oh--and this is good--she also accidentally has her mother, Mama Rose, following me.

I adore you, Shari, and this post of thanks is LONG overdue. Thank You.

My Second Follower: Again, how fortunate can one blogger be? My second follower is the one of a kind, sensational, Naomi of Organic Motherhood with CoolWhip.  I met Naomi, before I had a blog. She encouraged me to begin one. Over and over, she'd encourage me to just start one. But I compared myself to her, and thought, "I can never do what this woman does."

I had followed Naomi over from a post I had read on mamapedia. I was so charmed by her honesty as she wrote of her failings on a playdate, as she tried too hard to make friends. How wonderful, to read someone not pretending that everything they did was perfect.  Instant admiration, on my part. I was so taken in with her, that I continued to visit her every day. When I finally did decide to start my own blog, I wrote one of my very first posts--when I was a week old--on this new blogger I had found, Naomi.

Naomi's posts are filled with honest recounting of the transition to motherhood, as she raises her young children. She writes of mothering, of marriage, and finding friends when you're a mother. She does this all with a fantastic wit, and makes you laugh at the absurdness with which you sometimes can find yourself in. I love her.

As time went on, just as in Dusty Earth Mother's case, I found out what a marvel Naomi was. That she had continued to leave me comments, when she was a very busy woman: she is a published author, a contributing writer at many sources, and involved with teaching children's classes. Currently, she is the voice of  Baby Lucha, at SheKnows.

How did Naomi, and Shari, find the time??

They just did.

Which is why, today, is dedicated to Earth Mother Just Means I'm Dusty and Organic Motherhood with CoolWhip.   My first followers.

You both changed my blogging life. Thank you.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be ye kind, leavest the Comment Love.  Especially to the wobbly-legged newbies.

  1. I remember my first commenters, too. Most of them, I've lost touch with, but still think of them fondly-- you never forget your first.

  2. Just like you to share your blogoversary writing lovely things about others.

  3. Oh what a happy post. I don't have a lot of followers, but I remember making that connection out in cyberspace with the first ones. What an adreline jolt!

  4. How sweet are you? Now this makes me want to go back and highlight my first followers...maybe I will take your lead, if that's ok :)

  5. What a sweet sweet tribute to these girls! Love this idea.

I adore Naomi, but sadly haven't vistited her in ages. This gives me an excuse to pop over. Thank you!

    ;-)

    congrats again on your blogoversary!

  6. I've been blogging for more than four years, and I still get giddy over comments. It never goes away.

    Congrats on your blogoversary.

  7. smiles. i remember those days, my own at least, first getting started, a comment was like manna from heaven...someone knows i exist...

  8. I remember my first non-friend commenter. She doesn't comment anymore, but reading each others' blogs and encouraging one another are some of my favorite memories of this bloggy world.

  9. I love this, going back to your firsts, great idea! Off to meet the ladies you highlighted, happy day 5!!

  10. Hi Alexandra! I am back now. Was so surprised to see that you are celebrating your one year anniversary! How much you have accomplished! That is very sweet of you to recognize your first followers. We really do remember our first ones, don't we? The ones that made us feel so validated, that reassured us it was not a big mistake to hit publish on our blog. Congratulations again!

  11. And there's just something about saying, "my followers." It's almost like you're the leader of your own cult. I used to hop around and excitedly tell my husband, "I have 25 followers on my blog!" He'd just roll his eyes. So one day he read a blog post and was shocked to find out, "Omg, you're actually funny! Really funny!" I mean, the man LIVES with me, you'd think he should know. Yes, but he didn't read my blog then. Now he'll routinely ask about my followers. (I cannot wait to have over 100! I am totally jealous of you there, Miz 634 Followers in a Year.)

It's nice to know someone gives a crap about what you're saying. I have been ignored, unaccepted, and made fun of most of my life. So it's nice to know someone out there, even if they're miles away, gets you. And the blog community is wonderful, more loving than a family - you know people got your back. I'm honored to be a follower and leave really long run-on, rabbit-chasing comments. I lurve you.

  12. OH, Jaybird: who would ignore, not accept, and make fun of a beautiful, talented, gifted, loving woman who has Pioneer Woman as a stalker?

I ALWAYS love to see your little box face here. And am happy to be one of your faithful, loyal followers. Along with Pdub!

  13. Shari was kind enough to comment on all of my early, awfully written posts, too. She is such a wonderful and kind person.

And I just love Naomi, too. She is always so sweet and encouraging.

This is a perfect way to celebrate your blogoversary, by acknowledging the ladies who supported you in the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ah, the power of the commenter.
    Good stuff, that.
    Good followers, too.

I've been blogging for more than five years, but I really only developed a core following in the last year - maybe I hit my 10000 words, or whatever, but let me tell you, I may have peed my pants a little when bloggers I admired started coming around... and leaving comments!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have some people I love like that too. They come by every week. I feel like we're long lost sisters.

How thoughtful of you to acknowledge them this way!

    ReplyDelete
  16. this is a fun post ... first followers: there's such a great bond with them, isn't there!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I remember my first ones too. Mostly found through SITS. And mostly not blogging anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My first follower was Tim. Then there was an anonymous person. The first blogger with a real picture doesn't write anymore. That makes me sad.

I love this tribute to the ones that were there in the beginning. That was a good feeling getting the first ten.

    ReplyDelete
  19. What a lovely post! It's amazing how much your blog has grown. And you really were fortunate to have two true followers right in the beginning. I think my first follower was my mother in law :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's so cute that you know that! I'm sure my first followers were people i harrassed into reading my blog.

But, what number am i cuz i want to write it down in my diary? 7 million? 506949? huh, what? oh nevermind, i'd follow you anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ah.....I remember my first followers too! It mean so much to know I was not alone out there.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Awwww...loved this. And I'm proud to say that my dad is my #1 fan. Literally and figuratively.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, Empress. It's true, how like you to spend your Blogiversary talking about others.

There's simply no one like you, my dear friend.

Not only truly talented, but a heart that just leaps out of every word you type. Honestly, if blogging had done nothing else for me, it would have been worth it just to meet you.

You deserve every comment and friend you have in the blogosphere. Which are many and varied. And loyal, as they should be. Because loyalty is one of your best qualities.

You know I'm praying for you :-) No, not that you can once more drink the nectar of the gods (coffee), but that you can be my roommate at BlogHer. And anyone else who prays, can you join it on this?

I love you. I really do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. shoot - my first commenters were my sister in laws (like... ummm 5 of them...) and I love them still... (okay, so I just had to say that to keep the peace...)

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's how I found you - through Shari. She is a good friend.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My first couple followers were non-blogger friends who were just trying to be nice. My first real commenter (someone I didn't know) I basically shamed into commenting on my blog by dropping gushy needy suck-up comments on her blog until she gave in. I still dance around the room for practically every comment. I'm a bottomless pit for external validation.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You are so sweet. You make me feel so evil.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You are the fairy Godmother of blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Congrats on your blogoversary! Only 1 year? Holy crap- you are awesome! I have the same warm & fuzzy feelings towards The Mayor of Crazy Town - my first follower:) She was just as sweet, leaving comments on every post and for the longest time being the only person commenting. Isn't it great knowing such amazing, caring women?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh Empress, you are such an amazing person. I feel so blessed that we found each other in this big huge blogosphere. I cannot tell you how much I admire you as a writer and as a person. You are a source of light to everyone you meet. Thank you for honoring me this way. But truly it has been an honor for me to be able to know (and follow!) you. I love you Empress. You have stolen my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Of course you would use this week to highlight other people, because you are amazing.

I still remember your first comment to me! I was just bowled over, really.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's funny cause I can remember my first comments and followers to this day!

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is a lovely idea and makes me reminisce about your early days of blogging. xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  33. Naomi was one of my first few commenters, too!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I remember my first commenters.

They gave me hope and encouragement to keep going.

Day five is beautiful...and it does seem like this week is going by fast!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'll never forget that feeling either. I remember my first two non-IRL friend followers. It felt amazing. So sweet of you to honor them this way - but you're just sweet like that. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. This explains so much. Lovely to get so much background in one post.

    ReplyDelete
  37. First, I've love seeing the "shake it" lady picture in my email everyday. I'll miss her next week.

Next...You started with two lovely commenters, and then turned into a Fairy Blogmother to millions. Sounds about right. You have become the queen of comment love, and we're all grateful!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love that you know who your first followers were! I should go back and look, because I don't remember. I had so many posts with NO comments in the beginning, and I even deleted my very first post at some point!

We love, love coming back here Empress...and if I've missed a post I try and go back to catch it, because I feel all left behind if I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The connections you spoke of here are so touching because I can feel how much they meant to you. I am so glad they were there in just the way you needed at that time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I LOVE Shari, the DustyEarthMother, too. She was one of my early connections because she is a local gal to me here in NYC (lives just over the river in NJ) and we first met up in person last spring.

She is just fabulous. Now, why did I never think to propose marriage to her?

Love and more happy blogaversary kisses to you * * *

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love . Love. I can remember getting my first comment...it was a. Spammer but I was so excited. Like "Whoo hoo!" excited, but my first real person comment made me so happy and so very validated...like "Hey someone is reading what I have to say"...

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's lovely. You create such a wonderful sense of community. Bravo!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Everything about this post is just beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I just want to say that you are a wonderful writer, and a great friend. I send you love.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I LOVED reading this. It's so clear from your posts, comments and others' comments on your posts (oh, dear; bear with me?) that you make intimate connections over this usually anonymous, cold medium that make us all want to move next door and be best buddies with you. You're the "hub of the wheel" and we're lucky to know you. (If I were more like you, my first followers wouldn't be so close in number to my current followers.) Happy belated blogoversary, baby!

    ReplyDelete
  46. How beautiful! You are such an inspiration! Thank you for reminding me how special my support system is, even if I only know them via text!

    ReplyDelete
  47. What a great story! I know just what you mean.

I'm new, too, and I have a few followers I guess. And you have been one who has taken the time to come and visit and leave a comment. So I will always think of you with this same fondness. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Shari is awesome! I actually found you through Shari's blog. She is also responsible for this swear; BALLS 8-10!.
Btw, I emailed Shari to see if she could tell me how to make a "button" for my Hannah blog. She said you would know. Any chance that is an easy process?

    ReplyDelete
  49. This was awesome! I love blogging so much, especially because of the awesome network of friends I've made, the blogging community, because I love to write an dof course, because comments from awesome people. When I don't get a lot of comments on a post, it makes me sad! :(

    ReplyDelete
  50. Happy Day 5!!

Thank you again for sending folks over for your interview...it was a blast! :)
And comments? Your post has had the most, by far, I have EVER had!

What a lovely thing-paying tribute to your "firsts"...you are awesome.

    Plain and simple.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So true, Alexandra! I remember my first so well - and one day she just stopped posting and visiting and I kept wondering what happened to her. But I will never forget her kindness.

And you, of course, were in my first handful of followers too. You, KLZ, Natalie and Liz. Bless you, my friends.

  52. I love how you are spending your anniversary week! :)

  53. We all say we'd blog if nobody read, but how sweet it is when someone takes the time to comment.

How about the wobbly blogs of the blogger who's been at it for awhile?

    Here's to loyal followers!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dear Empress, delurking to say thanks for the posts and happy blogiversary! I enjoy your point of view, too timid to start my own blog.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I remember the first comment I got from someone who was not a) family b) a friend or c) coerced by one of the above to help build up my esteem. Magic.

And I have to say that I adore Naomi. You couldn't have a better blogger buddy. I've never heard of Sharri's blog, but now I'm off to read.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow! These are lovely ways to honor your first followers.

You really are gifted. I love the way you write.

    ReplyDelete
  57. The lovely Moosh in Indy was the first person I didn't know in real life to read my blog loyally. It was the boost I needed for sure.

And now? I know Casey IRL and I love her even more!
